My sister and I went shopping today, i was going to buy a "Manto", a self-invented kind of clothes designed by Islamic republic of Iran after the revolution of 1979. I can say for sure that i hate Manto! isn't it funny that I hate what I wear at least 8 hours a day? But still in comparison with 20 years ago,-when mullahs had longer beards and smaller brains- we are so lucky! because the nasty Manotos are shorter now and they come in different nice colors, and wearing a nice pink manto on streets is no more Taboo, at least not in Tehran.

Everybody knows how much girls and women care for looking beautiful, how much they love wearing beautiful dresses with happy colors. yellow , pink, red, i love them all! but when you have a look at people on streets you realize that at least one of each 2 weomen is wearing black, but why? we are in 2005 not 1985, beautiful colors are not taboo anymore, they wont arrest us, wont send us to jails for wearing a beautiful yellow short Manto, then why don't the majority of girls still prefer black and other dark colors than light ones?? I know the answer cause i myself am one of them! i bought a dark Manto today not because i like dark colors no i hate them, and not because i dont like happy light colors no i love them!... well, if you are a girl who is not very slim, then wearing a light color Manto will make you look funny and overweight, you will seem fat! i myself wearing a light Manto look overweight but in a dark one i look slim, isn't it strange? i don't care if you think my story is silly or unreasonable, don't forget that i'm living in the heart of Tehran and i know how people think and act cause i am one them.

Now imagine that instead of these long montos which are like shortened pregnancy dresses we would wear a simple shirt and jeans, then the fat-looking problem would never appear, and no any young girl would be this silly to put light colors away and choose the dead dark colors!

PS: pictures belong to this website that I like so much...

The Manto doesn't look like it was intended to compliment a woman's figure! I suspect one would have to be taller than average to look slim in a pastel colored one. Black tends to conceal shapes rather well...

I was in India recently and there is a similar dispute playing out between women of different ages although it is driven more by custom than anything else. Older women wear saris all the time (no matter how difficult and dirty the work they are doing may be!) while the younger Indian women prefer jeans and a decorative top. Their mothers express dismay but can't change their daughters.

I loved your insight on the brain size of the mullah but it is their outdated faith that is going to be wiped out by reality soon. down with the barbarism of mullahs

For Fatema the blogger. Just wanted to say I read your whole blog and you are an inspiring person who I really admire. Don't let the mullahs get you or your people down - change will come with people like you! I would love to meet more people with your attitude.

One question I have - aren't you afraid that you could get in big trouble for posting the things you do? Can't the religious people check what you are writing?

Keep telling about your life.

No women in the world, over the age of 5, looks good in Easter Egg Pink anything. How about a flattering oatmeal coloured manteau? Taupe? Olive? Slate Blue? With a hot pink headscarf edged with sparkly sequins. Strike a blow for freedom!

Hi old girl,

Is it called "manto" or "manoto"? You wrote both!!

If it is manto, it's just like the French "manteau" or the German "Mantel". And women wear it here normally between the seasons, when it is neither cold nor not.

So, don't worry, if it is good for Parisians, it should be good enough for you. And as to colour: you should not run around dressed in black like a crow. Stick to colour, colour is life, preferably to a slim looking death, or at least a slim looking crow or a raven.

Let's have your comments on that one.

Georges

Hi Fatema,

Reading my text again, I realize it's not exactly what I had in mind: the garment women wear overhere does not exactly look like your "manto". They have a kind of bell-like form and are definitely not like those shown on your photo in this shop. Unfortunately, your blog does not has the possibility to mail a photo, otherwise, I would send you a photo
of the French "manto" with someone sticking in it.

Cheers, Georg

I could not make any specified heads nor tails out of what was discussed especially about that fatty-fatty stuff! And my focus of concern is not that matter of light colors, which to me sounds quiet equitable. Yet I strongly believe, what you call "Manto" (which is supposed to be mantua) is not anything invented by any "genuine" Iranians. On the contrary, for your and everyone's information reading this scribble, I should like to note that this kind of raiment was first worn in Europe in the late 17th and 18th century. As it may ring a bell, the word itself (actually a modified form of manteau) comes from the Italian city Mantua, of which fantastic fabric productions. On the whole, I assume it's fair to impart to readers, especially those foreign ones, with the leads happen to be authentic anywhere.

It's weird that women in Turkey are not recognized yet how Iranians suffer from manto thing.

Sallam Fatema!!!

I just wanted to say I read your blog and to be honest - I cant imagine being forced to wear something in public but given the govermental circumstances you live in - what can you do? I think Iranian women are beautiful ( the best in the world) and manto's or hijabs - only make you more beautiful!!! Covering up as we all know is very modest and classy and Im actually writing you to ask you if you can forward me any Iranian websites where I can order manto's - like fashionable ones - online... Is there such a thing? If so, can you email me??? (jessicarix@hotmail.com) thanks...

I appreciate you taking the time to get to back me if you can...

yalla,
Jessica
